SOCIETY of ILLUSTRATORS Student Competition

WESLEY RYAN CLAPP will be featured this year in the 2011 Society of Illustrators Student Competition Exhibit in New York City. The piece selected comes form a series of 6 fine art objects as illustrated social critique, created under TM Davy during my final semester at The School of Visual Arts. It is an honor to have been selected for this show. The work will be on view at the Museum of American Illustration hosted by the Society of Illustrators in May, 2011.

The Museum of American Illustration at the Society of Illustrators presents the 2011 Student Scholarship Competition featuring the works of over two hundred of today’s top college level illustration students.

A jury of professional peers including illustrators and art directors have chosen the most outstanding works created throughout the year. Pieces are accepted based on the quality of technique, concept and skill of medium used. After reviewing 7,002 submissions, only 200 were selected for this year’s Exhibition.

The Society as well as various other generous private and corporate donors grant over $50,000 in scholarships to the best students featured in the competition. Beginning May 4 through May 28, 2011, the Museum of American Illustration will display the student’s original artwork as well as a full color catalog. Awards and certificates will be given to the students during the Opening Reception on May 6, 2011.

Presiding over this years event and awards was the great MARSHALL ARISMAN. Awarded during the Opening Reception are this year’s Distinguished Educators in the Arts. GIL ASHBY of the College of Creative Studies will be honored with the Contemporary Distinguished Educator. John Lagatta of the Art Center School will be awarded posthumously. This prestigious award is presented to an educator who has made a strong impact on illustration as both a teacher and an artist.
